KYIV - During a press conference at UNIAN news agency, which took place on August 27, 2009, Patriarch Lubomyr stated that: "The crisis, in which we have found ourselves, shows a great malady in the society. This crisis is of the mind and heart. And this is worse than the economic crisis. In one word, the society fell ill."

"We can overcome this sickness, in my opinion, if each one of us, both young and old, tries to protect himself as a person," continued Patriarch Lubomyr. He mentioned the concerts that the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) organizes for the youth to help them discover themselves as persons. "Not an object, but a subject which has its own dignity and calling to do something for oneself and for others," said the head of the UGCC.

"It seems to me that we cannot wait for someone from the outside to undo our problems. Outside help, of course, is beneficial: from parents, teachers, clergy, from the society. But definite accomplishment needs to come from within, thus a meeting of a person, with such difficult elapsing values, which is a skillful beauty, provokes insight and cleansing to become more oneself," summed up the head of the UGCC.

In the opinion of Patriarch Lubomyr, the second most important factor to overcome the crisis is the feeling of responsibility over oneself and others.
