Tutu says South Africa needs new political party to counter ANC

07-10-2008

South African Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, has said he supports the formation of a new political party in South Africa because the country has effectively become a one-party state that needs a strong opposition, reports Ecumenical News International.

"I would think you really need to have a viable opposition … one that gives the impression that it could become an alternative government. We do not have anything like that just now and that is probably not such a good thing," Tutu told South Africa's largest circulation newspaper, the Sunday Times.
