Kyiv Patriarchate Supports Ukraine Joining NATO

06-10-2008

Chernivtsi- The Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) supports Ukraine joining NATO. So said the head of the UOC-KP, Patriarch Filaret (Denysenko). The hierarch stressed that, since the baptism of Kyivan Rus, the Ukrainian land has become part of the Christian civilization and therefore we should return to Europe. unian.net posted the news on 6 October 2006.

"We can borrow many things from the EU, particularly, democracy. At the same time, Ukraine can contribute something to Europe," said Patriarch Filaret. "In particular, spirituality, which is being lost by European countries at a catastrophic rate. Whereas, in Ukraine, despite complicated economic conditions, new churches are built and people go to church." According to the patriarch, Ukrainians think about eternal values and not only about earthly things.

"Ukraine should also join NATO, for we need a security system, as no one is guaranteeing this after our renunciation of atomic weapons," said the head of the UOC-KP.

However, Patriarch Filaret added that the UOC-KP has no intention of influencing the decision-making process by any means. The issue of joining NATO and the EU is to be resolved by politicians.

According to unian.net, at a press-conference in southwestern Ukrainian Chernivtsi during the celebration of the 600th anniversary of the city, Patriarch Filaret said that he is convinced that the UOC-KP will be recognized as canonical in the near future. "Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, who came to Kyiv for the celebration of the 1020th anniversary of the Baptism of Kyivan Rus, had a different goal this time, namely to become familiar with things. And he saw the strength and power of our church in the Ukrainian land. I am convinced that after this visit, the decision about our canonical recognition will come soon," said the patriarch.
