Do not take revenge on government, say Lithuanian bishops

05-10-2008

Lithuanian Catholic bishops have cautioned the country's citizens not to take revenge on the current social democrat-led government by voting for what have been described as populist parties in forthcoming parliamentary elections, reports Ecumenical News International.

"Disappointment and rightful indignation at the behaviour of many of the elected politicians makes us realise that these things happen due also to the fault of us as voters in terms of our indifference, as well as our lack of better understanding and responsibility", the bishops said in a pastoral letter issued in advance of the forthcoming 12 October elections.

The bishops called for a week of prayer before polling day so voters could reflect on the decisions to be made in the national elections.
