Victims of Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine Remembered in Croatia

Zagreb— The Unquenchable Candle, a torch symbolizing the victims of the 1932 Holodomyr famine, arrived in Croatia on September 13. Anatolii Oliinyk, Ukraine’s Ambassador to Serbia, passed the torch to Markiian Lubkivskyi, Ukaine’s Ambassador in Croatia in a Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in the city of Vukovar. In attendance were famous public figures, activists of public associations of Ukrainians in Croatia, diplomatic officials and representatives of the mass media. The ceremony was extended with a requiem for the victims of Holodomor.

RISU was told by representatives of the Ukrainian Embassy in Croatia that the ceremony included an academy on the 1932 Holodomor in Ukraine. In his speech to the academy, Ukraine’s Ambassador, M. Lubkivskyi, said the Unquenchable Candle is a symbol of the Ukrainian memory, uniting Ukrainians around the greatest tragedy of their nation.

The participants of the action carried the candle in a procession along the streets of the city of Vukovar, the symbol of freedom and revival of the Croatian nation, and lowered wreathes in the Danube river to remember the victims of Holodomor.

On September 14th, the candle was passed to a Greek Catholic Church in the town of Slavonskyi Brod, where a requiem was served.

On September 16th, the candle was passed to Zagreb, where another requiem was served in the central Greek Catholic Church and a procession was conducted through the central streets.

The Holodomor booklet was presented in Zagreb. It was previously sent to Croatia’s President and Government top officials.

The event was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Croatia, state and public organizations, Ukrainian-Croatian Friendship Society and Ukrainian community.

On September 18th, the torch was passed to Hungary.
