«Unquenchable Candle» of Memory of Holodomor (Genocide) Burnt in Rome

In Ukraine and in the Ukrainian diaspora in the world the memory of those who perished as a result of one of the most terrible tragedies of humanity, the genocide-holodomor of 1932-33, is being honored. At the initiative of the Ukrainian authorities the international action «Unquenchable candle - Ukraine remembers - the world acknowledges,» which was founded in Australia and now, crossing borders, steps into the world, is being conducted.

In Italy a symbolic torch for the 75th anniversary of the Holodomor will burn from September 2-8, 2008.

On Thursday September 4 in Rome in the Ukrainian Catholic parish church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus on Madonna dei Monti Square, a memorial Divine Liturgy and Panakhyda (memorial service) were celebrated. Divine Liturgies will also be celebrated in Naples and Milan.

With the purpose of shedding light on the tragedy of the Holodomor and reviving pages of Ukrainian history which were silent until now, on Friday September 5 at 10:00 at Rome's City Council in Caesar Hall, a conference organized by the diplomatic representative office of Ukraine and Ukrainian associations in Italy with the support of Italian institutions will be conducted.

The Embassy of Ukraine at the Holy See plans to light a symbolic "Unquenchable candle" also in Saint Peter's Basilica in the Vatican in front of the mosaic icons of Saints Volodymyr and Olha which were placed on the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus'-Ukraine.
