08.09.2008 - Lutsk - The appeals court in northwestern Ukrainian Volyn, which had begun a trial for the cruel murder of Fr. Iliia, pastor of St. Michael's Church, decided to continue its hearings in closed sessions. At the same time the request of the defense of the defendant was fulfilled, as the defendant is accused in an intentional murder with self-interested motives. ukrinform.ua posted the news on 3 September 2008.

Petro Filiuk, head of the court of appeals, said that this decision was motivated by the special features of examining the motives of the murder. Facts from the private life of both the defendant and victim will be revealed during the process. The issue is small details of private life exclusively. Therefore, all the people who came to the sensational trial, including representatives of the press, were asked to leave the hall of the judicial session.

Fr. Iliia from the village of Bilostok (Lutsk District) was murdered in his parish house by a few strikes of an axe to his head. According to the information of the investigation, the victim and the suspect in the cruel murder, Serhii Dumchev, a twenty-five-year-old resident of the Dnipropetrovsk Region, knew each other for a long time.

As the pastor of the church in Bilostok, Fr. Iliia offered Dumchev his home to stay in, when the "sinner" left a colony and by chance found himself in Volyn. The priest intended to direct the boy on the right way. But he robbed the priest a few times, then ran away and came back again. When the thief stole a large amount of money once again, the priest wrote a statement to the police, but he had not yet given it to anyone. The suspect allegedly found out about this statement. After the crime the belongings of Fr. Iliia were taken by the suspect: a bloodstained sweater, scarf, and two credit cards.
