Ukrainian Greek Catholic Synod Discusses Evangelization

08-09-2008

Lviv - The Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), which started on 3 September 2008 in the Cathedral of St. George in Lviv, will last until 9 September. At the work of the synod, headed by the head of the UGCC, Patriarch Lubomyr (Husar), all 38 bishops of the UGCC from Ukraine and abroad are taking part. The main theme of the working meetings will be the question of evangelization.

Patriarch Lubomyr, commenting on the theme of the synod, pointed out that evangelization first of all means spreading the Good News brought by Jesus Christ that the human being, in spite of his sinfulness, can be saved thanks to God's mercy and grace. "Each of us is a sinner and needs God's help. It is a great joy for us that it is possible to leave the state of sin and become a child of God. Everyone who has already received the Good News must become stronger in it and share it with everyone who hasn't heard about it for some reason. This is evangelization," the head of the UGCC explained.

According to Patriarch Lubomyr, a strategy of evangelization for whole church, not only in Ukraine but also in the diaspora, will be elaborated at the synod. "The prime task of the church is to evangelize, to spread the Good News. We will set ourselves to thinking what is the best way to do this, how to prepare for it, what must be the understanding of it. In fact, by the power of baptism we are called to evangelization," the head of the UGCC said.
