Preservation of Wooden and Other Old Churches Concerns Ivano-Frankivsk Authorities

04-09-2008

Ivano-Frankivsk- The regional administration in western Ukraine's Ivano-Frankivsk Region is concerned about immediate repairs needed to 129 architectural monuments, including old wooden churches and other places of worship. Though the authorities are satisfied for the most part with how the religious communities take care of their buildings, some situations meet their disapproval. if.gov.ua posted the news on 4 September 2008.

The administration notes that almost all monuments of sacred architecture have been given to the property or at least the use of religious communities, which are obliged to preserve them in accord with current legislation while using them and conducting repairs and remodeling.

The administration's report notes that the majority of church communities have a responsible attitude regarding the preservation of sacred architecture and conduct repairs at their own cost when necessary.

However, the report also notes some serious violations by church communities of current legislation regarding monuments of architecture. As a result of improper use of electrical networks and equipment and careless lighting of candles, over the last 16 years 17 wooden churches have burned down. And 12 churches that were architectural monuments were, without permission, taken down by communities because of their dangerous condition.

The report also comments on the unauthorized replacing of roofs of wooden churches, re-painting over ancient icons and icon-screens, covering wooden parts with shiny film, and so on.
