New Session of Ukraine Parliament Opens with Prayer

03-09-2008

Kyiv- A moleben (prayer service) to bless the start of the latest plenary session of Ukraine's Parliament was held on 2 September 2008 in the Chapel of St. Volodymyr, Equal to the Apostles, in Kyiv's Parliament building.

Fr. Viktor Yatsenko, the chapel's chaplain, led the service, with the blessing of Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP).

After the moleben, Archbishop Auhustyn (Markevych), representative of the head of the UOC-MP in Parliament, blessed those national deputies present in the chapel for the start of the legislative process (see photo).

According to orthodox.org.ua, the conflict regarding the need for a functioning church at Ukraine's Parliament is now resolved. The chapel continued functioning after an official written response of 25 January 2008 by Bishop Oleksandr (Drabynko) of Periaslav-Khmelnytskyi, secretary of the head of the UOC-MP, to the accusation that there is discrimination against other religious denominations by the UOC-MP. The issue was supported personally by Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko and Arsenii Yatseniuk, head of Parliament.

Liturgy is celebrated twice a week in the chapel, and baptisms, weddings, and panakhydas (memorial services) are also celebrated there.
