Kenya Catholic bishops reject Milingo call that celibacy not feasible

03-09-2008

Some Kenyan Roman Catholic bishops have rejected a claim by an excommunicated Zambian archbishop, Emmanuel Milingo, that celibacy is no longer feasible in the life of the modern Church, saying the principles of obedience and the centuries' old practice of priests not marrying will continue, reports Ecumenical News International.

"Celibacy is not for everyone, but only a few chosen ones," Bishop Martin Kivuva of Machakos told the daily newspaper, the Kenya Times on 1 September. Kivuva said that the former Zambian archbishop's suggestions were unacceptable. "We know there are challenges for those who decide to lead a celibate life, but such people require encouragement and support," said Kivuva.
