John Paul II Monument Unveiled in Odesa

Odesa- A monument to Pope John Paul II was unveiled on Katerynynska Street in southern Ukrainian Odesa. unian.net posted the news on 25 August 2008.

The ceremony blessing the monument was attended by bishops and priests of the Roman and Greek Catholic churches. The archbishop of Krakow, Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, who was the personal secretary of John Paul II during his term of office, was an honored guest at the ceremony.

The event was also attended by representatives of the General Consulate of the Republic of Poland in Odesa and visitors from Belgium, Italy, Poland, Belarus and Russia.

During the ceremony, Bishop Vasyl (Ivasiuk) of Odesa and Crimea of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) noted: "Pope John Paul II as the first Slav on the Roman apostolic see contributed greatly to the development of Ukrainian Christianity, of which our multi-denominational Odesa is a part."

The unveiling was preceded by a religious procession from St. Peter's Church on Havanna Street to the cathedral on Katerynynska Street, attended by approximately 200 faithful.

The opening of the monument to John Paul II near the Cathedral of the Assumption was held on the occasion of the 4th Catholic Youth Day of the Odesa and Simferopol Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church.
