Ukraine’s President Greets Patriarch Bartholomew I

Kyiv-As Ukraine's President greeted Patriarch Bartholomew I at Boryspil airport, he noted that the visit of the Constantinople Patriarch to Kyiv is viewed as an expression of deep Christian love for all the Ukrainian nation. "We see your visit to celebrate the jubilee of the baptism of Ukraine-Rus as the recognition of a thousand years' achievements of the Ukrainian Christians and the Ukrainian Church in the service to the Lord," said Victor Yushchenko.

Ukraine's President expressed his gratitude to the Universal Patriarch for the efforts made by him for the sake of the development of spirituality in the whole world. "Your restless pastoral work in the name of peace, justice, and brotherly love among people is deeply respected by us," said Yushchenko. "I believe that Your support will strengthen our spirit, give strength and help to find the way to agreement and unity in Christ." Today, Ukraine's President and the Universal Patriarch will visit the Kyiv Monastery of the Caves, participate in the ceremony of laying flowers at the monuments to Princess Olha, Cyril and Methodius, Andrew, the First Called Apostle, and St. Volodymyr.

In the evening, a service with the participation of the President and the Constantinople Patriarch is to be celebrated in the Holy Sophia's Cathedral for the occasion of the 1020th anniversary of the Baptism of Kyivan Rus.
