ROC Comments on Statement of Ukraine’s State Committee

02-07-2008

01.07.2008 - Moscow-As reported by RISU on 25 June 2008, the State Committee of Ukraine on Matters of Nationalities and Religions stated that Patriarch Alexis "made at least two mistakes" in his comments about the statute of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church during his speech at the Hierarchical Council of the Russian Orthodox Church.

According to the State Committee of Ukraine, the Communication Service of the Department of Foreign Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate made a following statement: "According to the statute of the Russian Orthodox Church, passed in 2000 by the Jubilee Hierarchical Council of the Russian Orthodox Church with the participation of all the bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the Statute of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church is approved by its head and confirmed by the Patriarch of Moscow and all Rus (Chapter/Clause 8, paragraph 17). The norm to which the state committee of Ukraine refers does not annul the provision that the Statute of a self-ruled Church is subject to approval by the Patriarch of Moscow and all Rus (Chapter 8, paragraph 13). According to the 2000 year old Jubilee Hierarchical Council's definition of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, this paragraph of the Statute is not included in the list of ones not applicable to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
