A pilgrimage to Zarvanytsya of the penitentiary service of Ukraine will be held

18-06-2008

On June 17-18, 2008, with the blessing of His Beatitude Lubomyr, the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church in cooperation with the State Department of Ukraine is conducting a pilgrimage to Zarvanytsya for workers of the penitentiary system of Ukraine. Prison workers and clergy of various Churches will take part in the pilgrimage.

Last year, during the signing of the agreement about cooperation, the Head of the UGCC expressed a deep awareness by the Church of the vocation to serve not only those deprived of freedom but also to serve prison workers who execute a responsible social mission in difficult conditions.

One of the directions of development of cooperation between the UGCC and the State Department of Ukraine on Questions of the Implementation of Punishments is conducting pilgrimages for workers of the penitentiary system.

The UGCC has proclaimed the current year as the Year of Christian Vocation, and prison ministry is one of the vocations of the Church given by our Lord Jesus Christ. Also, 2008 is a jubilee for the State Department of Ukraine on Questions of the Implementation of Punishments, because it now marks 10 years from the day of its creation. It is also necessary to add that the penitentiary system was separated from the armed forces and ministries and now it operates as an executive service with special status. In the circumstances of the system's reformation, pastoral care in prisons is receiving better formulation.
