Clerics Recruited To Support Humanae Vitae

18-06-2008

Washington, Jun. 16 - Father Thomas Euteneuer, the president of Human Life International (HLI), is calling upon priests to sign a "pledge of assent" in support of Humanae Vitae, to mark the 40th anniversary of the historic encyclical.

The pledge, Father Euteneuer said, is a "veritable manifesto of priestly love for our beloved magisterium, doctrine, and priesthood, in the face of a whole generation of silence and dissent" following the release of the encyclical, in which Pope Paul VI upheld the traditional Church teaching against contraception.

Since the document's release in 1968, the HLI president observed, the world has seen the predictions of Pope Paul VI confirmed, with a worldwide epidemic of "broken marriages, devastated families, and pernicious immorality." Loyal clerics should take a clear an unambiguous stance to reverse that moral decline, Father Euteneuer argued.

Priests, deacons, and seminarians wishing to sign the pledge of assent will find the text on the HLI web site.
