KYIV - On the occasion of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the emergence of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) from the underground, Ukraine's President Viktor Yushchenko and Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko sent their greetings to Patriarch Lubomyr (Husar), the head of the UGCC. Addressing all the faithful of the UGCC, the president drew attention to the faithfulness to the faith of the forefathers. Despite the years of repressions and persecutions, the clergy and faithful followed Christ, which, according to Yushchenko, is an example of faithfulness to God and Ukraine.

According to the press service of the UGCC, the prime minister noted that "The Church of the blessed memory of Andrey Sheptytskyi and Cardinal Josef Slipyj revived and blessed the national revival of the nation, first, and then the independence of Ukraine. And the so-called Lviv Sobor of 1946, inspired by the communist regime, was to destroy the Church forever and make Ukrainian Catholics renounce their native tradition. But the Church survived even in the underground, and stood firm fulfilling its mission with honor," noted Yulia Tymoshenko.

"After the prohibitions, repressions and persecutions, and the almost complete destruction of the clergy, thousands of people who preserved in their hearts faithfulness to the Church of the forefathers went out to the streets of Lviv. The great feat of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, its hierarchs, ministers, and laymen who always followed Christ with piousness and love is a vivid example of faithfulness to God and Ukraine," says the presidential address.

The president expressed gratitude to all who "for decades fulfilled their spiritual mission in the underground and who today also continue to establish unshakable faith in the triumph of the Christ's truth, revival, and prosperity of Ukraine."
