KYIV - A prayer for Ukraine was held at the St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv for the celebration of the 18th anniversary of Ukraine's independence. The tradition to begin the celebration of Independence Day with a joint prayer for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people was begun a few years ago by President Viktor Yushchenko. Patriarch Lubomyr represented the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) in the prayer.

"Oh Lord! Disorder reigns over us, which we call a crisis. Each one of us ties to analyze on his own, searches for answers to escape from this crisis, but, of course, without success and without great benefit for the community. For some reason we do not want to appeal to You and search for answers, which You want to give us. And You, Lord, in your great wisdom, give us very simple answers, which can be said in three words: truth, justice, and love," stated the head of the UGCC during his prayer.

The Patriarch Lubomyr continued: "Today, gathered here in a church of Your Great Wisdom, on this important day for Ukraine, we ask You, Lord, to give us courage and spiritual strength to accept and put into practice Your answer: to live by truth, act justly, love one's people."
