IVANO-FRANKIVSK - On August 16, 2009, in the Prykarpattia city of Nadvirna near the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was unveiled a monument to Pope John Paul II and a grotto to the Virgin Mary. "Svoboda" radio informs that the local 400-year-old Roman Catholic parish was celebrated during the opening.

The monument was purchased in Poland from money from sponsors, including the Association of Former Residents of Nadvirna, Club of Admirers of Nadvirna, and the city council of the city Prudnik. The grotto was built with the support of local parishioners.

A delegation from Poland headed by the mayor of Prudnik came for the opening.

From Padua relics of Saints Lavrentiy and Antonij were brought to the church in Nadvirna 360 years ago. With time many scared items disappeared from the church; from decay and a fire in the 19th century.

The Soviet government closed the church in 1947 and it was returned to the community in 1991.
