VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope Benedict XVI offered his prayers for the people of Honduras and encouraged the nation's ousted president and current political leaders to engage in dialogue for the good of the country. "In these days I am following with deep concern the events in Honduras," the pope said after reciting the Angelus July 12 with visitors in St. Peter's Square.

Honduran President Manuel Zelaya was ousted in the early hours of June 28 when Honduran soldiers -- acting on the orders of the National Congress -- shot up his house and took him, clad in pajamas, to the airport.

Accused of treason and of trying to circumvent the nation's constitution, he was flown on a military plane to Costa Rica.

Honduran Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga of Tegucigalpa, who had said the church did not back the coup d'etat although Zelaya has been sowing division in the country, told Vatican Radio July 14 the pope's attention lifted the spirits of many Hondurans and gave them strength.

"Among the followers of the former regime there are many Catholics who are acting in good conscience," he said, but "the church cannot take sides. The church seeks reconciliation, peace and, above all, understanding through dialogue."
