LVIV-From 28 June to 4 July, 2009, at the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU), with the support of the Konrad Adenaur Fund and the Lviv City Council, took place a Summer Philosophical School "Christian Values in the Public Sphere: from principles to embodiment," which brought together 40 students, graduate students, professors, and civil leaders from 19 cities of Ukraine who have an academic or practical interest in the sphere of public management.

The leader of the school and prorector of strategic planning of UCU, Volodymyr Turchynovskyj, informed RISU correspondent Mykola Malukha that the university strives to be a place to form an accurate understanding of the world for various environments. "The themes of the lectures and discussions became calls for participants to integrate Christian values into the society," underlined the prorector.
The organizers informed that the second Philosophical school interested more than 110 people from Ukraine and Russian. "We were pleased that there were no applications that the leaders could have refused. Thus we can observe a high interest in Christian themes among our youth," stated Turchynovskyj.

As part of the school, the participants learned the European experience in embodying Christian principles in the public sphere and were acquainted with several models of solving concrete management problems in various segments of the public space. In addition to lectures and group work, the participants of the school had a chance to visit places of Christian resistance to the totalitarian regime and take part in a round table discussion "The Media and the Public Sphere" at UCU with the participation of the General Director of the consulting company "Pro.Mova" Yevhen Hlibovytskyj, prorector of UCU Myrsolav Marynovych, and others. In the opinion of one of the professors of the school, Yurij Piddisnyj, the excursions to places of resistance illustrated that a great deed of one person can bring change not only to one village, city, or country, but to a whole worldview. "It is important to understand that the community stands stronger when it is grounded in Christian principles," summed up the professor.

The participants of the summer school highly valued their experience. The leader of the Christian-Democratic Youth Union, Ihor Lub'yanov, sees the importance of other such schools for young politicians. "We have countless seminars about political strategies and ideology, but there are not enough with a philosophical basis, which influence the formation of values which later will influence the political life of the country," remarked the young civil activist.

UCU Professor Petro Husak is sure that schools with such formats have prospects because they help form active, analytical people, who later can help embody values in the environments where they work or study. The theme for the next school will be about the interaction of Christian values and politics. "The modern Ukrainian society needs to solve its problems concerning these values in politics, how to make them not only theoretical but also practical," summed up Professor Husak.
