09-08-2008

07.08.08 - On August 3, 2008, on White Mountain near the village of Pidlissya, Zolochiv District, Lviv Region, the traditional Shashkevych festival was held. Many guests from different corners of Ukraine came to the native village of poet Markiyan Shashkevych, who was a Greek-Catholic priest. Near a high cross which was set there in 1911, Divine Liturgy was led by Most Rev. Ihor (Voznyak), Archbishop of Lviv.

Archbishop Ihor together with the Basilian Fathers led a joint prayer service near a grave to fighters for the independence of Ukraine. Answering the question of a correspondent of Radio Vatican, "How does he judge such a meeting ?", Archbishop Ihor said that he judges it very positively. In fact, he said, we are honoring the memory of our heroes, in particular priests who did much good from which we are now benefiting.

During the artistic part of the festival on White Mountain in Pidlissya, poets Ihor Kalynets', Roman Lubkivskyj, and Petro Shkrabyuk, Lviv researchers of the activity of Markiyan Shashkevych, read a poem devoted to the ceremonies in Pidlissya. In particular, Doctor Feodosiy Stebliy presented the reprinted book «Rusalka Dnistrova» (Mermaid of the Dniester).

At the completion of the celebrations amateur groups from the Zolochiv District performed songs to the words of Markiyan Shashkevych.
